Arts Education

Theater Education and Community Theater (2000-2007)

I taught theater in Bay Area schools and facilitated community-based theater projects, including:

    • Collaborating with English teachers in the Oakland Public Schools to develop literacy-focused theater residencies in which students created their own performance material based on a theme of their choosing (with Opera Piccola);

    • Teaching workshops to educators K-8 on using the California Visual and Performing Arts Standards and integrating theater into the classroom curriculum (clients include ArtSpan and the Arts Education Funders Collaborative)

    • Developing theater curriculum tied to history, science, and English Language Development, working with Young Audiences of Northern California and LEAP.

    • Working with Pre-K teachers in San Francisco to use drama and storytelling as teaching tools
    • Collaborating with youth to develop original theater performances about their personal experiences (the Play it LOUD! project at the Pacific Center, the Yo! VIP project at the Excelsior Teen Center).
    • Creating original performance works with people with disabilities (the Brain Injury Network of the Bay Area and Theatre Unlimited at the Pomeroy Center).
