All Over the Map, 2025. Image transfer, soil chromatography, watercolor with soil and lake pigments, foraged charcoal, and plant monotypes on paper
A selection of mixed media work I created based on my October 2024 residency at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area is now on view at the Sawtooth NRA Visitor Center in Ketchum, Idaho. Mapping Materiality in the Sawtooths is co-sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the Sun Valley Museum of Art. The exhibition runs from June 16 – August 27, 2025; visitor hours are Monday – Wednesday from 9am – 3pm.
The work in this exhibition is documentation of my relationship-building, my mapping of the landscape. It is made with paint and ink colored by handmade soil and plant-based pigments, charcoal gathered from areas that had recently burned in the Wapiti Fire, soil chromatography—a process that uses photo-sensitive chemicals to produce an image of the composition of soil, and image transfers of geologic maps.
I will be giving an artist talk at on Thursday, August 14th at 5pm, and leading a workshop on making soil pigments and painting with soil watercolors on Saturday, August 16th from 1-3pm, both at the Sun Valley Museum of Art.
