I am pleased to share a selection of my work inspired by local geology at Black Moth Tattoo and Gallery in Ardmore, PA. The paintings in this exhibition were created in the last five years, inspired by rock formations in the Philadelphia region in Wissahickon Valley Park, Lorimer Park, and Pennypack Park. Many incorporate visual data, such as geologic and soil maps, and are made with natural pigments made from soil and plants, solvent-free oil paint, and other ecologically sustainable materials.
This show includes a brand new painting, Wissahickon Time Scales. For this work, I handmade oil paints using soil, eggshell, and lake pigments that I made. The substrate is a cyanotype of a composite map of the Wissahickon Valley–terrain, soil maps, and human-built structures. I tinted the cyanotype with tea. This process is an extension of the works I made for Mapping Our Watershed.
